Why Your Back Hurts — and How We See It

Understanding your dosha pattern is the first step to the right treatment.

💨
Vata & the Joints
All pain (Shula) is a Vata disorder in Ayurveda. Back pain, stiffness and joint pain arise when Vata accumulates in the Asthi Dhatu (bone tissue) and Snayu (ligaments).
🔥
Pitta Inflammation
Inflammatory joint conditions — swelling, heat, redness — carry a Pitta component. Anti-inflammatory herbs, cooling diet and specific yoga address this pattern.
🌍
Kapha Stagnation
Kapha in the joints creates heaviness and morning stiffness. Movement, warmth and stimulating therapies like Abhyanga are indicated.

Therapeutic Asanas for Back & Joints

🙆
Balasana — Child's Pose
Hold 60–90 sec · Daily
Gently decompresses the lumbar spine, releases hip flexors and calms the nervous system. Most effective first-response posture for acute lower back pain.
🐈
Cat-Cow Sequence
10 rounds · Twice daily
The foundational spinal mobility sequence — lubricates all spinal discs, releases paraspinal muscle tension and restores the natural spinal wave.
🦵
Supta Padangusthasana
3 min each side · Daily
Supine hamstring stretch that relieves lower back tension by releasing the posterior chain — the primary driver of chronic lower back pain.
💪
Setu Bandha — Bridge Pose
5 reps · Daily
Strengthens the posterior chain (glutes, hamstrings, lower back) which directly supports and protects lumbar spine health.
🌀
Ardha Matsyendrasana
60 sec each side · Daily
Spinal rotation releases thoracic and lumbar tension, hydrates intervertebral discs and stimulates the Vata seats in Ayurveda.
🧘
Yoga Nidra for Pain Relief
20–30 min · Daily
Reduces pain perception by disengaging the pain-amplifying default mode network — particularly effective for chronic pain conditions.

Beyond Yoga — The Full Protocol

👐
Abhyanga — Oil Massage
Daily warm sesame or Mahanarayan oil self-massage directly feeds bone tissue, lubricates joints and calms the Vata that causes pain.
🌿
Herbal Support
Shallaki (Boswellia), Guggulu, Nirgundi and Rasna — classical herbs with strong anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, prescribed by constitution.
🤲
Marma Therapy
Pressure on Katikataruna Marma points (lower back) and Kurpara Marma (elbow joints) releases blocked Prana and provides immediate pain relief.

Frequently Asked

Can yoga fix a herniated disc?
Yoga cannot reverse a herniated disc structurally, but therapeutic yoga can significantly reduce pain, restore function and prevent recurrence by strengthening supporting musculature.
Which conditions respond best?
Lower back pain, sciatica, early osteoarthritis, cervical spondylosis, frozen shoulder, knee pain and general joint stiffness all respond well.
How is this different from physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy focuses on physical structure. Our approach adds Vata-Pitta-Kapha pattern analysis, Ayurvedic diet and herb protocols, and nervous system care — treating the whole person.
