Muhurta (electional astrology) is the art of selecting the optimal moment for important life events. The cosmic configuration at the moment of initiation is "born into" the event — just as a birth chart is cast for a person — and shapes its entire trajectory.

A skilled Jyotishi considers the Panchang (5-limb almanac): Tithi, Vara, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana. Universally inauspicious periods — Rahu Kaal, Yamaghanta and Gulika — are carefully avoided.
